How to Transfer Emails from Mozilla Thunderbird to Gmail

Users of Mozilla Thunderbird can easily transfer their emails, either in full or selectively, to their Gmail account without editing the headers (the messages will be forwarded exactly as they were received—there is no option to edit the subject/content individually). This can be useful for archiving purposes.

To accomplish this, you need to install the Mail Redirect add-on in Mozilla Thunderbird:

  1. Go to the add-on’s website and download it to your disk.
  2. After downloading the add-on, open Thunderbird and select: Menu >> Add-ons, and from the left menu, choose Extensions.
  3. Click on the gear icon and select Install Add-on from File, then point to the previously downloaded add-on file.
  4. The add-on requires a restart of Thunderbird
  5. To forward the emails, select them (by holding down the CTRL key, you can select individual emails, or press CTRL + A to select all emails in the chosen folder).
  6. Click the REDIRECT button and enter the destination email address to which you want to forward the emails.

Note: When forwarding to a Gmail account, the following email reception limits apply:
