One of the secure login options using two-step verification is the Google Authenticator app, which generates access codes. This application can be downloaded from the Google Play Store (Android).
Installing the Google Authenticator App
In the Google Play Store, search for “Google Authenticator” and install it.
Enabling Google Authenticator on a University Account
After logging into your university account, go to the “Manage your Google Account” panel.
On the left side menu, select “Security”.
In the “How you sign in to Google” section, select “Authenticator”.
After selecting the aforementioned option, you need to set up the application on your phone and scan the QR code.
This guide pertains to securely logging into a university account. The Google Authenticator app can store login codes for various applications where two-step verification is available. For the codes to be synchronized, it is a good option to log into a personal Gmail account (e.g., when changing phones). Otherwise, the access codes will need to be added again.
To scan the QR code, open the Google Authenticator app on your phone and select the plus icon in the bottom right corner.
After scanning the code, a notification bubble will appear at the bottom of the app confirming the code has been added. On the webpage with the QR code window, select the “Next” button. A field will appear to enter the code from the Google Authenticator app. The codes update every few seconds.
Information about the added secure login via Google Authenticator will appear in the Security section.
Logging into the Account Using a Code from the Google Authenticator App
After entering your email address and password to log into the university account, a field will appear to enter the code from the Google Authenticator app.
When logging in on an unrecognized device or a device that “is not yours,” you should uncheck the “Don’t ask again on this device” option.
